Sustainable Urban Development – The Big Challenge of the 21st Century
CONFERENCE
December 9, 2016 – Gr. Lambraki 240, Municipality of Korydallos
Urbanization constitutes nowadays a rapidly evolving phenomenon at a global scale, while United Nations estimations predict the further deterioration of this remarkable trend until 2050. The evolving trend is expected to define socioeconomic development and environmental aspects of urban areas in the 21st century.
Cities are nowadays considered as the SOURCE but also the SOLUTION of global challenges
Coping with the impacts of evolving urbanization is at the heart of decision makers and planners, in the sense of articulating policies that can effectively handle the goal of sustainable urban development. Indicative issues in this respect relate to the promotion of:
- energy efficiency and renewable energy production;
- effective waste management schemes by adopting three Rs (Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle) practices;
- effective water resource management systems;
- sustainable mobility practices and carbon-free transportation means;
- awareness of various societal groups for promoting more environmentally friendly behaviour;
- culture as a pillar of sustainable urban development etc.
Of crucial importance in the above efforts is the radical development of technology and its innovative applications in the urban context, along the lines of the emerging smart city context.
The Conference aims to promote:
Good Practices for Managing the above Problems at the Urban Level
The Conference is organized by Gr-RAC team (http://iygu.ntua.gr/gr), Dept. of Geography and Regional Planning, School of Rural and Surveying Engineering, National Technical University of Athens (NTUA) in cooperation with the Municipality of Korydallos (http://www.korydallos.gr/).
